2nd ESG Workshop in 1998 Simultaneous Simulation

Simultaneous Simulation for Kobe and Northridge

INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS OF SS (March19, 1998)

DATABASE CD-ROM FOR SS IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. WAIT A MOMENT.

SS Northridge case was dropped from the official ESG98 project.

(1)Purpose of the simultaneous simulation (SS)
To compare each other the simulated synthetics submitted by numbers of participants from all over the world for Kobe and Northridge earthquake as examples, to understand the key parameters for quantitative prediction of strong ground motions, and to find future directions of research related to the ESG study and strong motion prediction.

(2)Rules of SS for Kobe
Data collected and prepared for this SS project by the organizer will be open to anybody who wants to participate SS. The digitized figures will be placed on the Web of ESG98 and printed forms of them will be mailed upon request only to those who have strong difficulties to access the Web. All the strong motion records for this SS project will be mailed to you by CD-ROM once you register.
The target sites at which participants are requested to calculate their own synthetics will be specified by the organizer. Only some of them have strong motion records either mainshock or aftershocks, which will be provided to you. Among the target sites six will be in Kobe and six in Osaka --go to RULE->. To submit mainshock synthetics at these target sites is mandatory, while to submit mainshock synthetics at other sites or to do aftershock synthetics are optional.
There is no restriction on the method to be used. Thus you can calculate synthetics solely based on a theoretical model of source, path, and site, or you can do using the observed rock-site records as a reference. You need to submit a paper which describes the methodology, assumptions, and the calculated results. If you will use a complex rupture process inverted from the observed seismograms, we recommend to use one of the well-constrained inversion results which will be shown on the Web.

Start of data distribution: 98/11/30 (by CD-ROM) (UNDER CONSTRUCTION)
Deadline of registration: 98/1/31 (by an e-mail)
Deadline of simulated motions: 98/7/31 (by a floppy)

(6)Northridge case
---->

SS Northridge case was dropped from the official ESG98 project.

As for the Northridge case the SCEC project of the Northridge SS inside the U.S. seems to need time to finish more than expected and so the data for Northridge have not been compiled yet. We are trying to find another way to compile available data for Northridge in time. Please register as participants and watch our Web if you are interested in the Northridge case.
