2nd ESG Workshop in 1998

2ESG "FIRST CIRCULAR"

Invitation for Simultaneous Simulation Call for Papers to Technical Session

OBJECT

The Second International Symposium on the Effect of Surface Geology on Seismic Motion will be held on November 25-27 (tentative), 1998, at Yokohama city, Japan, under the auspices of the IASPEI/IAEE Joint Working Group on ESG and the Earthquake Engineering Research Liaison Committee, Science Council of Japan and Association for Earthquake Disaster Prevention. Much was learned from the blind prediction as well as many technical papers presented at the first Symposium that was held in 1992 at Odawara city, Japan. After that, we have experienced many devastating earthquakes including the 1993 Off-Kushiro, the 1994 Northridge, and the 1995 Hyogo-ken-nanbu (Kobe) earthquakes. These earthquakes have again and again shown the importance of quantitative estimation of the Effect of Surface Geology (ESG). This international symposium will provide an opportunity to exchange information on the broad spectrum of the ESG study. At the same time, it is intended to stimulate further ESG studies using strong motion data observed in recent devastating earthquakes. We expect to have researchers in this field from around the world together to exchange ideas and experiences and to discuss the remaining problems and further perspectives. It will be a wonderful opportunity for the worldwide researchers on ESG to look at themselves and to find their own directions of research.

PROGRAM

Technical Sessions
[ a ] Observational study
[ b ] Weak motion site effects
[ c ] Non-linearity
[ d ] Microtremors
[ e ] Simulation methodology
[ f ] Source and path vs. ESG
[ g ] Attenuation
[ h ] Long period motion
[ I ] Random medium
[ j ] Topography
[ k ] Other topics related with ESG

Special sessions

1) Simultaneous Simulation; What's the key?
The key factors required for the successful prediction will be made clear through simultaneous simulation on the devastating earthquakes by many researchers as well as engineers. Simulation is open to anybody.
[ a ] Kobe case
[ b ] Northridge case

2) Test Sites; Progress, Problem and Perspective.
[ a ] Test sites in various countries.
Summarizing reports for test site experiments at Turkey Flat, Kushiro, Thessaloniki, San Francisco, Mexico City, Guerrero, Granada, Taipei, Manila, etc.
[ b ] Ashigara: Review and report of additional works done
after the Ashigara Blind Prediction (will be prepared by Japanese WG)

3) Reviews; What we know and what we don't.
State-of-the-Art reports on the estimation of site effects will be given by invited speakers.

INVITATION FOR SIMULTANEOUS SIMULATION

Simultaneous simulation will be made in order to find keys to successful reproduction of the observed data and to understand how strongly or weakly each ambiguous parameters affect the result. It is not intended to have researchers compete on how well their predictions fit the observed data.
[ a ] Kobe case
Data such as target and non-target strong motions, geological information, source characteristics, references, etc. will be distributed via ftp/WWW. Submitted simulated motions will be compared with each other. The Japanese Working Group will handle most of the work on information clearing house and organization.
[ b ] Northridge case
The same kind of simulations will be called for under close collaboration with Southern California Earthquake Center project for the 3-D modeling of basin effects on strong motions, which will be lead by Prof. R. Archuleta of UCSB and Dr. N. Abrahamson. At the time of the symposium, several U.S. research teams will have completed their results of the simultaneous simulations on the Northridge case.
